FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 23, 2026

Washington, D.C. – The Housing Policy Council (HPC) issued the following statement today in response to the passing of HPC Executive Council Member Kurt Pfotenhauer:

“The members and staff of the Housing Policy Council are deeply saddened by the passing of Kurt Pfotenhauer, a cherished member of the HPC community and a towering presence in the housing finance industry.

Kurt was a leader of uncommon generosity. Again and again, he reached out, often early and often quietly, to offer guidance, encouragement, and perspective. He had a gift for welcoming others, asking thoughtful questions, and sharing hard-earned wisdom freely. Many within the HPC community benefited from his counsel, and often those conversations marked the beginning of enduring professional and personal relationships.

Kurt’s devotion to the mission of the Housing Policy Council was unwavering. He engaged deeply in our work, served as a trusted confidant to colleagues and leadership alike, and brought clarity and keen judgment to complex and consequential discussions. His peers held him in the highest regard—not only for his industry leadership and insight into policy and politics, but for the integrity, humility, and care he brought to every interaction.

Beyond his professional contributions, Kurt was valued for who he was as a person. He believed relationships mattered, that faith and family anchored a life well lived, and that leadership carried with it a responsibility to care for people, not just institutions. His warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

We are profoundly grateful for Kurt’s leadership, friendship, and devotion to this organization and to the industry he served so faithfully. He will be deeply missed by the entire HPC family. Our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt condolences are with his wife Nancy, their family, and all who loved him.

Kurt’s legacy will endure—in our work, in our community, and in the many lives he touched.”
